‘Pose’ Star Indya Moore Becomes the First Trans Person to Cover Elle Magazine

Pose star Indya Moore may only be 24 years old, but the actress continues to break barriers.
This month, she’s on the cover of Elle Magazine, making history as the first trans person to cover the famed fashion magazine.
Moore, who is nonbinary and prefers the pronoun “they,” but was ok with the use of “she” and “her,” for the article, is part of the FX show, which features more trans actors than any other scripted show in television history.
She’s aware of the impact of the show as well as her being on such a public platform. She tells the magazine that the weight of social justice and advocating for the voiceless is heavy on her shoulders, especially considering her upbringing with parents who could not accept her for who she was and her decision to enter foster care at 14.
“I don’t know how to have fun,” she admits. “I don’t know what my favorite restaurant is. When I’m around people having conversations about their day, I’m looking at them, like, ‘What could they possibly be talking about? How are we not talking about deconstructing white supremacy right now? How are we not trying to save trans people?’ ” She goes on. “I don’t know who I am outside of someone who’s just trying to be free and find safety for myself and for others.”
For Moore, life hasn’t been easy. She’s open in the interview about dealing with being a victim of human trafficking, sexual and domestic violence and abandonment. But with her newfound position as a voice for underrepresented people, she’s found light in her life and has even begun reconciling with her mother.
“I just knew my life was going to change,” she says. “I knew I had a chance to teach the world something that would help more people to be safe.”
