Kelis Condemns The Music Industry Exploiting Black Artists
Kelis recently took to Instagram to condemn the music industry for exploiting Black artists. As we previously reported, on Tuesday (June 2), when a myriad of record labels pledged to back the Black Lives Matter movement, Kelis shared that the music industry needs to start with itself.
“If the music industry wants to support black lives, labels and platforms can start with amending contracts, distributing royalties, diversifying boardrooms, and retroactively paying back all the black artists, and their families, they have built their empires on,” Kelis wrote in her post.
Kelis’ message was endorsed by a handful of artists who agree with the “Milkshake” singer, including Erykah Badu, T.I., Rapsody, India Arie, DJ Spinderella, and Azealia Banks. Badu reposted what Kelis wrote, and several artists commented.
“Yesssirski,” Tip wrote while India Arie commented, “E. It’s time to come together and make a plan.” “ALL OF THIS!,” commented Rapsody, and DJ Spinderella wrote, “I’m here for this !!!”
