First Muslim Marvel Superhero ‘Ms. Marvel’ Releases Trailer, Announces Date
Marvel unveiled the first official trailer and poster for their upcoming Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel. This is the first superhero who is a Pakistani Muslim; she hails from Jersey City, New Jersey.
Per Verge, series creator Bisha K. Ali says that Ms. Marvel tells the story of Kamala Khan (played by newcomer Iman Vellani), a diehard Carol Danvers stan. Carol Danvers, of course, is Captain Marvel. Kamala first discovers her own flourishing superpowers and starts putting them to good use as villains begin to take root in Jersey City. Similar to her comics counterpart, Kamala doesn’t hide the fact that she’s something of a fanfiction-writing nerd, something that few of her peers really understand other than her friend Bruno Carrelli (Matt Lintz).
Unlike the comics version of Kamala, who develops the power to enlarge parts of her body through the Inhuman terrigenesis process, Ms. Marvel’s Kamala’s abilities are apparently more cosmic in nature and involve her making energy constructs. Insignificant as the changes to Kamala’s power set may seem now, they may be a sign of how she’s going to eventually cross paths with her idol Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau (who appeared first in as a child in Captain Marvel, which took place in the ’90s, and later as an adult on WandaVision). The three characters are scheduled to appear together in The Marvels, which is scheduled for February of 2023.
Ms. Marvel hits Disney+ on June 8, 2022.
