North Carolina Get Ready: The Powerball Jackpot is Over $400 Million
Someone in North Carolina could be waking up extremely happy Sunday morning, as the Powerball jackpot for Saturday night has climbed over $400 million.
It’s the 30th anniversary week of the multi-state Powerball, and five of the 393 jackpot wins in the 30 years have come from someone playing the North Carolina Education Lottery.
The big choice will be whether to take the $400 million annuity over 29 years, or just to take the lump sum payment of $240.8 million. Either way, it’s a LOT of money.
“What a great choice to have,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery. “We’ve had five Powerball jackpot winners in North Carolina and so far, each one has taken the cash. Here’s hoping someone in our state gets to make that choice again on Saturday night.”
To go along with the five jackpot wins in North Carolina, there have been 24 wins of $2 million, and 99 wins of $1 million. Officials said that Powerball sales have raised more than $1.1 billion for education in North Carolina.
The last Powerball winner was on Valentine’s Day in Connecticut, where someone won $185.3 million. It’s been climbing every week, with no winners of the top prize in any of the three weekly drawings since. The odds of winning are 1 in 292 million to win on the $2 ticket.
North Carolinians can buy Powerball tickets at any lottery retail location in the state. Tickets can also be purchased through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com, and with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

It’s not that things are all unhappy around Fayetteville, it’s just that we didn’t exactly score well in a lot of the key factors for this study. Fayetteville does rank as the least happy of the major North Carolina cities in the study. Just behind Fayetteville overall is Jackson, Mississippi and Birmingham, Alabama.
Fayetteville also took a hit, coming in at No. 181 on Lowest Income Growth and No. 180 on Most Work Hours.
