If you purchased Fresh Express spinach products in the last week or so, you may want to go ahead and throw it out. Due to a listeria contamination, the company has issued a recall on its latest shipment of spinach, some of which made its way to North Carolina.

According to a release from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Fresh Express has issued a voluntary recall of a Fresh Express Spinach, 8 oz. size, with product code G332 and use-by date of December 15 and Publix Spinach, 9 oz size, with product code G332 and a now expired use-by date of December 14. You can find the product codes on the front of each package below the use-by dates.

The seven states in which the contaminated spinach was distributed include North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Listeria is a bacterial infection whose symptoms can mimic that of the flu. These symptoms sometime include diarrhea, fever, headaches and general fatigue. The infection can have a more severe effect on pregnant women, as it can also lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

If you have the recalled product in your refrigerator, the FDA advises you to throw it out rather than risk consuming it. Any questions or requests for refunds about the spinach recall in North Carolina can be made through the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center by calling (800)242-5472.
