The Secret To The Perfect Cup Of Tea Has Trouble Brewing Between England, U.S.
Trouble is brewing on social media between England and the U.S., and it’s all centered around the perfect cup of tea. What’s that thing about history repeating?
American chemist Michelle Francl recently published a book titled Steeped: The Chemistry of Tea. In the book, Francl deduces that for the “perfect” cup of tea, one should add a small pinch of salt to offset the bitterness. Pretty harmless right? Not if you’re British apparently!
This small suggestion sent shockwaves through the U.K., with Brits sounding off on X (fka Twitter) in an ironically salty display. Many seem to laugh at the mere notion of an American acting as an authority on perfect tea.

Some of the disparaging responses on social media include, “the last person I’d ask for advice on making tea is an American,” and my personal favorite, “I guess we’re going to war again?”
It seems that the inclusion of salt isn’t everyone’s – uhh -cup of tea (come on it was RIGHT there). The negative online response has been so overwhelming across the pond that the actual U.S. Embassy in London stepped in and issued a statement on the matter.
The response is of course lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek, ensuring Brits that, “…the unthinkable notion of adding salt to Britain’s national drink is not official United States policy. And never will be.”
But of course, the embassy wanted to get in one last salvo in the Great Tea War of 2024. They concluded their cheeky statement by saying, “The U.S. Embassy will continue to make tea in the proper way – by microwaving it.”
Man, if folks in the U.K. are this defensive of their bitter tea they’re going to HATE how much sugar we load it with here in the south. One sip of perfect Bojangles sweet tea legitimately might put them in a coma. ‘MERICA!
