Ask DB: In Sickness And In Health, Worth it?!
Welcome to DB’s Down in the DM, our weekly feature, where you, humble listeners and readers, get to ask 107.7 The Bounce’s advice guru your difficult questions. Today’s question is from a Guy questioning if this New Relationship is worth his health:
Yo DB, My friends think I’m crazy because I am thinking about breaking up with my girlfriend due to her job. They say the reason I am giving for the possible breakup is ridiculous. We have been dating for three months. Everyone loves her. The problem is I keep getting sick because she works as a nurse and brings home colds, germs and the flu. I haven’t been healthy in months. My friends are telling me to suck it up. I know this DM sounds ridiculous, but put yourself in my position. All I do is cough. What would you do if you were me? Is someone’s job a valid reason to end a relationship?
Now as a germaphobe I do feel your pain. I used to work in school photography which dealing with children is like being in a place filled with sicknesses floating around. I have hand sanitizer in every jacket pocket. Disinfectant spray in my office at work and home. And am a big time fan of wipes. So I get the whole avoiding being sick. My wife also works as an OT (Occupational Therapist) and was a traveling therapist during the pandemic. It was a scary time before the vaccine became available so we had to be extra careful to avoid getting sick. Despite my fears and extra prep to ensure my health not once did I think to leave my partner. A new relationship can bring out a lot of fear and questions within oneself. You need to be honest with a person if you just don’t see a future. People don’t want to be the bad person or hurt someone’s feelings but being honest can help a person not linger on or make a drastic change for someone when there isn’t a future. You run that risk to get sick everywhere you go so I think some deeper thought will show you the real reason you want to end things. Do the right thing.
