Fayetteville’s own J. Cole gave fans something to talk about this week, releasing a surprise collection of new music just hours before he turned 41 on Wednesday.

The Fayetteville rapper quietly dropped a four-track set of freestyles on Tuesday, calling it Birthday Blizzard ’26. The project, hosted by legendary mixtape DJ DJ Clue, popped up without much warning — and it landed right ahead of his next full album.

There are plenty of Fayetteville references dropped in from the Terry Sanford graduate. Of course, lots of 2-6 references abound, but there's even a Hope Mills Road reference on "Golden Goose Freestyle." The cover is even loaded with Fayetteville, including his childhood home, and the Market House.

Instead of the traditional album rollout, Cole directed listeners to his own platform to grab the new material. Fans can download the freestyles for a minimum of one dollar, with the option to pay more if they choose.

Among the tracks are four standalone freestyles with names like “Bronx Zoo Freestyle,” “Golden Goose,” “Winter Storm” and “99 Build Freestyle.” One of the standout moments finds him weaving bars over the classic instrumental from Diddy’s “Victory,” complete with familiar ad-libs from The Notorious B.I.G. and Busta Rhymes.

But it’s not just a birthday gift — the songs also give listeners a peek at where Cole’s head is at creatively. On at least one of the freestyles, he reflects on a much-discussed moment from his recent past, revisiting his public apology to Kendrick Lamar and talking about how that decision shifted his place in hip-hop conversations.

The surprise drop comes just days before Cole’s highly anticipated album The Fall-Off is set to arrive on February 6. Many fans see Birthday Blizzard ’26 as a warm-up — a taste of what’s to come.

Whether it’s a clever marketing play or just a way to give back to his supporters, J. Cole’s unexpected freestyles are keeping anticipation high as the music world counts down to his next major release.
