Nineteen years ago today (August 25, 2001), R&B legend Aaliyah died in a tragic plane crash that also claimed the lives of her hairstylist, security guard, make-up artist, and a few other members of her team.

The fatal plane crash that left family, fans, peers, and friends of the popular R&B singer devasted took place following the filming of Aaliyah's music video for her single "Rock the Boat."

Her funeral services were held on August 31, 2001, at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel and St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York City. Hundreds of fans mourning the singer, who was born in Brooklyn, but raised in Detroit, were in attendance at Aaliyah's procession.

Although Aaliyah died at the age of 22, the singer's music helped redefine R&B, pop, and hip-hop in the years that followed. And her legacy continues to live on.

Below take a look at the beloved singer through the years.
