Is it a peppy song? Or is it a REALLY sad song? What if it's BOTH?! Here's the music that leaves us emotionally confused af.

Music can perfectly express what’s feeling inside. For when you are happy you got bops to play, when you are going through a break you might have a song that perfectly explains your feelings. Then you have a song that isn’t really saying anything but goes perfectly with a new tik tok dance. For any mood, there is a song for it. But once we start mixing messages things get confusing. I grew up in the 90s and 00s era of music so certain trends became mega popular like the subgenre which I call Techno Sad Songs. It’s when you take a slow song but then remix it with a techno beat for when you are at a nightclub. I’m not the biggest fan of remixes to begin with because I’m a purist when it comes to original songs unless the remix is completely different making it special. Especially taking a sad song and add a beat is just insane. Example:

Techno-sad songs are emotionally confusing. Professing my love while breaking it down on the dance floor seems like not the correct mood. I mean look at this guy:

See that is a face of a confused man going through a tough break-up and not processing it in the correct fashion. Now this problem has persisted especially in the pop era of music across many genres but mainly based on the song lyrics. Some songs fly under the radar with the stellar instruments and sound like normal jams but when you actually listen to the lyrics they hit extra close to home. So for this week’s playlist, I have found the Sad but Not Really jams to make all your listening sessions extra emotionally confusing. Like these are all certified hits so sometimes we just gotta deal with it and keep the tears are home. Lets go!

  • City High - What Would You Do?

Girl, you ain’t the only one with a baby
That’s no excuse to be livin’ all crazy
Then she looked me right square in the eye
And said every day I wake up hopin’ to die.

Like the subject matter of this song is next level. You can not sing it like this.

  • Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run, outrun my gun
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks
You better run, better run faster than my bullet

Like this song is great but awkward to play at parties.

  • Reba McEntire - Fancy

She handed me a heart-shaped locket that said
“To thine own self be true.”
And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl across
The toe of my high-heeled shoe
It sounded like somebody else that was talkin’
Askin’, “Mama, what do I do?”
She said, “Just be nice to the gentlemen, Fancy
And they’ll be nice to you.”

This is the reason people have to go to therapy because of their parents.

  • Outkast - Hey Ya!

    You think you’ve got it
Oh, you think you’ve got it
But got it just don’t get it ’til there’s nothin’ at all
    We get together
    Oh, we get together
But separate’s always better when there’s feelings involved
    If what they say is
    “Nothing is forever”
Then what makes, then what makes
Then what makes, then what makes (what makes, what makes)
    Love the exception?
    So why, oh, why, oh
Why, oh, why, oh, why, oh
Are we so in denial when we know we’re not happy here?
(Y’all don’t want to hear me, you just want to dance)

That Flute Playing Trickster, Andre 3000 tricked us with the old school feel and clones of himself. This one is deep.

  • Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack

So, I’m back up in the game (Hustling slow)
Running things to keep my swing (All night long)
    Letting all the people know
That I’m back to run the show
‘Cause what you did you know was wrong
And all the nasty things you’ve done (Oh, oh, oh)
    So baby listen carefully
While I sing my comeback song

Now this is my favorite song to the point the most consider this my theme song. I would agree but this song is sneaky. Mark Morrison was in pain after being cheated on and decides to Return to the dating scene but as the beat is bumpin he is in pain. He even talks to the woman who cheated on him in this. This song hits to your core. Don’t take her back!
