LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 25: Ice Spice attends the BET Awards 2023 at Microsoft Theater on June 25, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

A new social media network has arrived under Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta umbrella. The text-focused social media platform Threads officially launched on July 5, 2023. Take a look below to learn more about Threads and see which of your favorite rappers already took the plunge onto the new platform.

What Is Threads?

Threads is an app that was built by the Instagram team, which is part of Meta. The app is obviously designed to rival Elon Musk’s Twitter which focuses more on text conversations than visuals. Although you can still share photos, videos, and GIFs on both apps. For Threads, your posts can be up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length. However, unlike its direct competitor Twitter, Threads users will notice that you are unable to message other users directly or to use hashtags.

Zuckerberg’s Threads has amassed 100 million sign-ups, according to the founder, over its first couple of days. The app had “mostly organic demand, and we haven’t even turned on many promotions yet,” Zuckerberg posted on Threads on Monday morning. “Can’t believe it’s only been 5 days!” With that amount of sign-ups, it has beat both ChatGPT and TikTok as the fastest-growing consumer app in history, according to CBS News.

TikTok took nine months to build the same amount of users. Instagram took two years to have 100 million users on the platform. Previously, ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence app used to formulate human-like responses in text and images, reigned as the fastest-growing app after amassing 100 million monthly active users within two months.

How Can I Sign Up For Threads?

You can sign up for Threads through your Instagram account. Please note if you have multiple Instagram accounts, you must log in and out of them to access each individual Threads account. Note that if you sign up for Threads, and then decide you want to delete your account, you also need to delete your associated Instagram account.
