On Sunday (Dec. 22), Bill Cosby's spokesman likened Eddie Murphy to a "Hollywood Slave" as a response to Murphy's jokes about the disgraced comedian during his highly-anticipated Saturday Night Live return, as Page Six reports.
Murphy took shots about Cosby's incarceration during his SNL appearance, saying “If you would have told me 30 years ago that I would be this boring, stay-at-home house dad and Bill Cosby would be in jail, even I would have took that bet,” Murphy said. Mimicking Cosby's delivery, he asked, “Who is America’s dad now?”
Bill Cosby is currently serving a three to 10-year sentence after being convicted in 2018 on three counts of aggravated assault for drugging and molesting Andrea Constand, a Temple University staff member.
Andrew Wyatt, Cosby's spokesman said that Murphy's jokes were “disparaging” in a statement.
“One would think that Mr. Murphy was given his freedom to leave the plantation so that he could make his own decisions; but he decided to sell himself back to being a Hollywood Slave,” Wyatt' s statement read.
Wyatt's statement said that Bill Cosby united people via comedy.“Remember, Mr. Murphy, that Bill Cosby became legendary because he used comedy to humanize all races, religions, and genders; but your attacking Mr. Cosby helps you embark on just becoming clickbait,” Wyatt’s statement said.
“Hopefully, you will be amenable to having a meeting of the minds conversation,” Wyatt continued.
Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy have an interesting past. During Murphy's 1987 stand-up comedy special Eddie Murphy Raw, Murphy stated that Cosby lectured him regarding his use of "foul language" in his stand up shows.
“I’ve been a big fan of Bill Cosby all my life,” Murphy said in the special. “Never met the man before, but he called me up about a year ago and chastised me on the phone for being too dirty on stage."
