Mya Says She’s ‘Open’ To Doing a Verzuz Battle
Could Mya be the next to go up against someone in a Verzuz battle? The R&B veteran recently said that she’s “open” to it.
During an interview with BBC Sounds, the “All About Me” singer said, “I’m always open. Especially now, shows and touring has been canceled until 2021.”
“I watched quite a few Verzuz battles and it doesn’t feel like a battle at all, more like a friendly artist camaraderie and respect. I think it’s genius. Very entertaining, people are very excited about culture coming together, especially now. So, I’m totally down,” Mya continued.
The singer also chatted about why she thinks ’90s R&B is so special and timeless while listing some of her favorite new-school R&B singers. “The ’90s R&B is so special because of the percussion that always slapped, but also those chord changes that, once again, touch your soul. You may not be able to articulate the way it makes you feel but it makes you feel something,” she said.
“Nicole Bus, she’s amazing. Tori Kelly, an amazing voice. Ari Lennox. Lucky Daye, who I actually worked with. H.E.R., Tone Stith, Summer Walker—a lot of them are musicians and it shows up in their vocal appeal or inflections and delivery. I love it.”
On Wednesday (July 22), DMX and Snoop Dogg go head to head in a Verzuz battle, as we previously reported. It will be aired on both Instagram and Apple TV in HD. The event is also sponsored by Diddy’s vodka Ciroc.
Verzuz is calling this celebration a “battle of the dogs.” “The battle of the dogs ‼️‼️ [DMX] vs [Snoop Dogg] Wednesday, July 22nd,” Verzuz’s official Instagram page posted on July 15. “Watch on our IG or in HD on @AppleMusic. Drinks by @Ciroc.”
Prior to Snoop Dogg posting about the battle on his Instagram page, he shared a photo of himself with DMX and wrote, “Doggs4life” in the caption. He also posted the official battle flyer and wrote, “I ain’t got no dogg in this fight! Yes, u do who u got ???”
