I have to tell you, I’ve become obsessed with reclaiming a zen space in my home. Like a lot of working moms, I tend to get focused on job obligations, home chores and of course, the most important job of all, my kids. As parents, sometimes our own peace and calm gets lost in the daily routines that make sure the machine of life keeps chugging along. I was talking to a good friend about this a while back and she said she has nowhere in her home to go and just find a calm, quiet space to unwind. In fact, as she comes from a farming family, she sneaks out to the family barn just to have some space to think.
Then I learned about hygge. According to the Scandina Standard: “Hygge is about cosiness and surrounding yourself with the things that make life good, like friendship, laughter and security, as well as more concrete things like warmth, light, seasonal food and drink. Hygge embodies a feeling of comfort, contentment, and well-being through simple and everyday experiences. It encompasses a range of feelings and experiences related to coziness, togetherness, and an appreciation for life’s small pleasures.”
Bingo. I found a concept that seemed to embody what I was missing in my routine. So, I set out to create a “mom space” for myself. I went online to learn what elements I needed and after lots of research, scouring Facebook Marketplace, and repurposing items I already had on hand to carve out slice of peace in my house.
