Steve Lacy: ‘I Never Felt Like I Needed To Come Out’
Steve Lacy never felt the need to come out about his sexuality. Back in 2017, Lacy answered a fan’s question on Tumblr. The fan asked if the Gemini Rights creator would date a guy. Lacy responded that he would and suddenly saw articles saying that he had “come out as bisexual.”
“I didn’t really come out,” the “Bad Habit” singer told Variety in his cover story. “I didn’t try to — it just kinda happened. I don’t care to announce who I’m into sexually. I think it’s silly. I never felt like I needed to come out.”
The Grammy-winning singer said his statements are his own and does not “care to speak for anyone else” since “all of our experiences are so different from each other.”

The singer also spoke about some of his experiences while touring for his album Gemini Rights last year. One notable incident was when he smashed a fan’s disposable camera that the concertgoer threw at him during his tour stop in New Orleans last October. At the time, the “Sunshine” artist did not believe the fan deserved an apology. He still stands on that notion. However, he rationalized why a fan would act this way at a concert. Lacy explained while it’s “F—ing annoying” that fans throw objects, he chalks it up to the fact that they’re just young. He also figured that most young fans may be having their first concert experience and that “they don’t even know what concert etiquette is.”
Lacy released his second studio album, Gemini Rights, last year. It was preceded by three singles, “Mercury,” “Bad Habit” and “Sunshine.” Not only did “Bad Habit” blow up on social media, it also earned the Los Angeles native three Grammy nominations: Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. Gemini Rights peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. The album earned the singer his first Grammy win for Best Progressive R&B Album.
